Personal Hygiene

Any form of personal hygiene that can prevent you from becoming ill is good, but remember anything that you haven't done yourself may not be up to your standard. Spitting is common in China and soap is optional in public lavatories.

Hygiene in the Home

Many teachers, like myself, find themselves in very hot provinces where kitchen and bathroom bacteria can breed much more rapidly than in the moderate climates where we have lived. Anything that is not kept cool will go moldy in half the time. Do not leave anything fresh out when you visit somewhere because when you return it will be moldy. Meat and eggs brought from a market should be eaten as soon as possible, even freshly laid eggs can go off rapidly if not kept refrigerated.

Do not mix meat from different days, if you are sick you won't know which of the meats upset your stomach.

Soap

Buy some packets of soap and take them with you when traveling. Many lavatories don't provide you with soap or a dryer. Toilets in large shops and restaurants are often cleaned regularly but public lavatories may not be cleaned as often.
